Its origins are uncertain; legend has it that its source is the amazing Lagunas de Ruidera lagoons, but the more widespread theory is that the source lies in the high plains of Campos de Montiel in the province of Ciudad Real. Its name comes from the Arabic, wadi-anas. Its basin has been calculated at 70, km2 and it is kilometres long; most of it flows through Spanish territory, with part of it running through neighbouring Portugal.
From the Portuguese settlement of Pomarao, it runs down towards the Atlantic joining Portuguese and Spanish shores. Both have castles and they are a pleasure to visit. Various sporting events are held throughout the year, including the Ascent and Descent by Sail, which takes place in August, and the international canoeing regatta in July.
